Share of Peace
The phrase share of peace means that after a long period of suffering, hardship, or turmoil, a woman found the the tranquility and rest she deserved. It is a poetic way of saying that peace eventually found its way to her.
Depending upon the context it usually implies one of two things.
• A peaceful resolution in life. She managed to overcome her struggles, anxiety, or chaotic circumstances, finally entering a calm and happy phase of her life.
• The peace of death. In elegecies or literature about someone passing away, this phrase is often a gentle, comforting metaphor for death. After weariness and pain of life she has finally found eternal rest and freedom from suffering.
In chapter 7 of Great Expectations, the phrase refers specifically to the death of Joe Gargery's mother.
