Marco Polo in Central Asia: 1. Armenia the Lesser

There were two Armenia - the lesser and the greater. [1] The last king of Lesser Armenia was subjected to the Tartars.  This region contains many cities and castles and abundance of all things, with beasts and birds for hunting and Hawking; but I must tell you the hair is not very healthy.  The gentry used to be formerly valiant and good at arms; but now they are mean and vile, and remarkable only for being hard drinkers.  On the seacoast is a city named Laias[2] which carries on a very great trade.  All the spices, rich clothes, and other precious articles are brought here from India across Euphrates.  Merchants from Venice, Pisa and Genon come here to purchase them.  By this town we enter the province of Turcomania. [3]

2. Laias: Modern day Ayas in the Adana province of Turkey. It is west of Ankara and northeast of Eskisehir.

Lesser Armenia was also known as Cilicia. 

3. Turcomania: This term is applied to all that part of Asia Minor (Anatolia, a Peninsula that makes up most of Turkey)then subjected to the Turks, consisting chiefly of modern province of Caramania and Roomyah. Caramania was an exonym coined by Europeans southern Mediterranean coast of Anatolia. Roomyah is the Arabic term for Constantinople.
