Marco Polo's Voyage to Indian Seas: 12: The Kingdom of Samara [1]

When a man departs from Basman (the island of Borneo) he finds the kingdom of Samara, in which I myself Marco Polo remained five months because of bad weather.  Here neither the north star nor the constellation of the Great Beard appeared.  The people are savage idolators, governed by a rich and powerful king, owning a nominal submission to the great Khan.  During our stay, we erected castles of wood and twigs, and remained therein, always fearing the savages, who eat their fellow creatures.  The best fishes of the world are found here.  The people have no wheat, living on rice, and they make no wine.

You must know, there is a kind of tree

of which they cut a branch, and place a pot beneath it, when in the night the pot is filled, and very good wine is thus obtained, both red and white.

The resembles a date palm with four branches, and when it ceases to give out wine, they water its root, which causes to produce again.  They have great quantities of Indian nut.  They eat all kinds of flesh, good and bad.

Now, let us tell you about a kingdom 

named Dagroian.

1. Samara: Likely, modern day Sumatra, an island among Sunda islands.

2. Tree resembling date palm: Palmyra palms native to South Asia.
