Marco Polo's Voyage to Indian Seas: 26: Comari [1]

Komari is a country of India, remarkable in this respect, that the north star, which we had not seen since leaving Java, appeared to us when thirty miles out at sea rising about a cubit above the horizon.  There are few domestic, but abundance of wild animals, particularly monkeys of various shapes, some of which would almost seem to be men. There are cats of
very peculiar and wonderful species, lions, leopards, and tigers in great numbers. I will now proceed to Eli.

Notes:-

1.Komari: Comari or Komari is a corruption of the word komberi, meaning Komb + Ari, Komb means promontory and Ari means place. So, Komberi means a place or settlement on Promontory. The area was new, uncultivated and fresh like a virgin girl. Thus the Puthu Komberi becomes Kanya Kumari. A temple in the vicinity gives legitimacy to this name.
