Nayan, a cousin of Kublai Khan, refused to remain under long subjugation, and declared sovereignty. He and his ancestors were vassals of Kublai Khan and his ancestors. He had many lands and provinces of his own and could raise thousands of horses at a time. He alongwith another nephew, named Kaidu  of hatched a conspiracy to attack the monarch. Nayan proposed to attack the monarch on one side, while Kaidu make an advance on the other side. Kaidu agreed to this proposal, and set out with an army of considerable strength. Nayan's forces, both cavalry and on horseback assembled and marched against the Great Khan.
