Travels Of Marco Polo: Forty Five

After leaving the stone bridge, I travelled thirty miles westward.  I passed through fine trees, villages, inns, and then came to a city named Geo-gui [ 1] The country is rich in food grains. The people are idolators [2] All forms of worship prior to Buddhism, and later Semitic religions, were called idolatry.  They lived by merchandise, and by arts like making cloth of gold, as well as silk and beautiful linen.  A mile beyond that city there are two roads, one leading westward through Cathay, and the other southward to great Manji. [ 2 ]  In riding westward through Cathay for full ten days there are handsome cities and castles, plenty of arts and merchandise, fine inns, trees, vines and a civilized people.
