Polo brothers were in Bokhara (modern day Bukhara in Uzbekistan) Alau, the chief who defeated Barka Khan, was sending ambassadors to Kublai Khan, the supreme chief of all other Tartar chiefs. Some of the ambassadors happened to meet the Polo brothers, and invited them to the abode Kublai Khan where they could get much honour and wealth. The Venitians happily joined them. The journey took a full year in the northeastern direction, hampered by snowfall and floods. At length they reached the residence of that mighty monarch.
